Srinagar, (DD): The Kashmir Valley is set to experience a prolonged wet spell starting today as a fresh Western Disturbance moves into the region. The Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecast moderate rainfall in the plains and snowfall in higher reaches, warning of a significant drop in temperatures over the next few days.
Speaking to the media, MeT Director Srinagar, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, confirmed the arrival of the system, stating, “A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Jammu and Kashmir from February 27 onwards. We expect light to moderate rain in the plains and snowfall in the upper reaches, particularly in Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, and other hilly areas. The intensity will be higher between February 28 and March 1, after which the system is expected to weaken.”
According to the MeT office, the wet spell will begin with light rain on Tuesday afternoon, intensifying on Wednesday and continuing until the weekend. Higher elevations, including parts of north Kashmir, Pir Panjal, and Chenab Valley, could witness fresh snowfall, affecting road connectivity in these regions.
Authorities have urged travelers to exercise caution, especially along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, where landslides and roadblocks are common during wet spells. Farmers have also been advised to take necessary precautions to prevent damage to crops due to prolonged wet conditions.
Dr. Ahmad further cautioned that, “The temperatures are expected to dip further, and the persistent cloud cover may delay the transition to spring-like conditions. People should stay updated with weather advisories and take necessary precautions, particularly those living in avalanche-prone areas.”
With Kashmir still recovering from previous bouts of snowfall and cold conditions, residents are bracing for another round of wet weather, which could disrupt daily activities and delay the much-anticipated arrival of spring. The administration remains on high alert, monitoring potential disruptions and preparing for any necessary interventions.(DD)
