Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg postponed due to inadequate Snowfall

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD): The much-anticipated 5th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG), set to take place in Gulmarg from February 22 to 25, has been postponed due to insufficient snowfall, officials confirmed on Monday. The decision was taken after an assessment revealed that the key ski slopes at Affarwat and Bowl lack the required snow depth for hosting competitive events.

Authorities, in consultation with the technical committee and event organizers, decided to delay the games as the absence of sufficient snow could compromise both the quality of competition and athlete safety.

“The required amount of snowfall for conducting the games is simply not there. Given the current conditions, it is not feasible to hold the competitions as planned. We will reassess the situation after February 19, as fresh snowfall is expected,” said Rauf Tramboo, President of the Winter Games Association of Jammu and Kashmir (WGAJK).

Despite the postponement, the logistical and infrastructural preparations for the event had been meticulously arranged. Officials confirmed that hotel bookings, event management, and venue readiness were in place to accommodate the influx of athletes and staff.

The event was expected to host around 700 participants, including 650 technical staff, delegates, and local athletes, making it one of the largest sporting events in the region.

With weather predictions indicating possible snowfall after February 19, organizers remain hopeful about rescheduling the games. A revised schedule will be announced once conditions improve, ensuring that the event meets international competition standards.

Gulmarg, known as the winter sports capital of India, has hosted previous editions of the Khelo India Winter Games, which have played a crucial role in promoting winter sports and attracting global attention to the region’s potential for skiing, snowboarding, and other snow-based competitions.

Officials and athletes alike are now looking to the skies, hoping that nature will soon provide the necessary snowfall to make the Winter Games a reality.( DD)
