Kangan,(DD)In a heartbreaking incident, at least 40 sheep and goats perished after a lightning strike hit a forested area in Hariganiwan, located in the Kangan region of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district late last night.
The livestock belonged to a nomadic herder who had moved into the area as part of the seasonal migration in search of grazing pastures. According to local sources, the tragedy occurred during a powerful thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall, which swept across the region during the night.
The herder, who narrowly escaped the incident, discovered the dead animals early this morning. The loss is being seen as a devastating blow to the family’s livelihood, as the livestock represented their primary source of income and sustenance.
Local residents and community leaders have appealed to the administration to provide immediate compensation and relief to the affected family. “This is not just a personal loss, but a blow to an already vulnerable nomadic community. The government must step in with support,” said one resident.
Officials from the Animal Husbandry Department and district administration have reportedly reached the site and are assessing the damage.
Further details are awaited.(DD)
