Srinagar, (DD) Inspector General of Police (IGP) Crime Jammu and Kashmir Sujit Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar GV Sundeep Chakravarthy, and martyred DySP Himayun Muzzamil are among 127 J&K Police officers who have been awarded the Gallantry Medal (GM) on the occasion of Independence Day 2025, as per an official document.
DySP Himayun Muzzamil, also a recipient of the Kirti Chakra (posthumously), was martyred while fighting terrorists in an encounter in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on 13 September 2023.
According to official figures, out of the 233 Gallantry Medals awarded nationwide this year, 152 personnel are from the Jammu and Kashmir region. The J&K Police leads the list with 127 awards, followed by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) with 20, the Border Security Force (BSF) with 16, Chhattisgarh Police with 14, and Uttar Pradesh Police with 17.
The Ministry of Home Affairs stated that a total of 1,090 personnel from police, fire, Home Guard & Civil Defence, and Correctional Services across the country have been honoured with Gallantry and Service Medals in 2025. These include 233 Gallantry Medals (GM), 99 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM).
Of the Gallantry Medal awardees, 54 are from Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, 152 from Jammu and Kashmir, three from the North-East, and 24 from other regions.(DD)
