A Memorable Journey of Learning, Exchange, and Experience –A New Chapter of Journalistic Insight among National Institutions

Mumbai:DD, The week-long Media Exposure Tour organized by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Jammu and Kashmir, became a memorable experience the moment a delegation of eminent journalists from Jammu and Kashmir arrived at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. The delegation was warmly received by PIB Mumbai officials, who welcomed them with the traditional Maharashtrian “Pheta”, symbolizing the region’s hospitality and the spirit of national unity.

The delegation, led by Ms. Neha Jalali, Director, PIB Jammu, was greeted with great warmth by the officers and staff of PIB Mumbai. The programme reflected the close collaboration between PIB Srinagar, PIB Jammu, and PIB Mumbai, aiming to provide journalists from Jammu and Kashmir with direct exposure to the nation’s major institutions, developmental initiatives, and policy frameworks.

Under the leadership of PIB Jammu & Kashmir, the five-day Media Exposure Tour to Mumbai served as a platform of integrated learning, exchange of ideas, and professional networking. It enabled journalists from Jammu and Kashmir to gain first-hand insights into the operational structures, policy implementation mechanisms, and technological advancements of India’s premier institutions.

The tour commenced with a visit to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) headquarters, where Chairman Animesh Shard Wagh and Mrs. Ambika Singh shared detailed presentations on the port’s world-class operations, container handling capacity, digitization, and clean energy initiatives. The journalists were briefed about the ambitious Vadhavan Port Project inaugurated by the Prime Minister and expected to become operational by 2030—which will not only ease Mumbai’s port load but also play a pivotal role in enhancing India’s export capacity, logistics efficiency, and global trade footprint.

The delegation received comprehensive data on JNPA’s modern operations, Digital Twin and RFID gate systems, DPD/DPE performance, and the technical aspects of Vadhavan. These briefings provided reporters with factual material to be used as reference in their future stories. Participants expressed gratitude, noting that such interactions empower them to connect local realities with national and global contexts in their reporting.

On the second day, the delegation visited the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) to understand the city’s urban governance, disaster management systems, and infrastructural foundations. BMC’s disaster management officials highlighted the city’s multi-dimensional risk response mechanisms, training institutions (CIDM), and emergency communication networks. Engineer Vijay Zore shared detailed data on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (South section), explaining that the corridor is expected to reduce travel time by around 70%, save about 34% in fuel consumption, and improve air quality. The delegation also visited the Haji Ali Pumping Station, where stormwater is discharged into the sea with a pumping capacity of 6,000 litres per second, offering participants a practical view of integrated urban planning and environmental management.

Reflecting on the day’s experiences, journalists observed that the visit was not just about infrastructure, but a glimpse into the practical politics of improving urban life. Participants appreciated the cooperation between PIB Mumbai and PIB Jammu, stating that such tours significantly enhance the standards of regional journalism.

The third day focused on India’s film and audiovisual industry. The delegation visited Dadasaheb Phalke Film City, Whistling Woods International, and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), where they observed the technical and creative dimensions of filmmaking. The rapid adoption of VFX, virtual production, and new media technologies demonstrated how storytelling methods are evolving and how media business models are transforming. Participants described the visit as both critical and inspirational, noting that institutions like Film City and Whistling Woods not only advance the entertainment industry but also nurture local talent to meet international standards. Many journalists termed the experience as a creative stimulus for their own professional writing.

The fourth day featured visits to IIT Bombay and the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), exposing journalists to the core of India’s scientific and technological capabilities. The Nano-Technology Lab, National Semiconductor Mission, and SPIR-IIT Research Park illustrated how academia, industry, and startups are working together to turn innovations—such as semiconductor design, AI in healthcare, and low-cost medical devices—into reality.

DAE’s presentations highlighted the peaceful uses of nuclear technology, the role of AKRUTI Centres in rural technology transfer, and the contributions of atomic research in energy and agriculture sectors. Participants said these briefings were highly informative and encouraged them to simplify technical subjects for the general public through their reportage.

The fifth and final day carried special significance as the delegation visited the Indian Coast Guard (Regional Headquarters, West), PIB Mumbai, and the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The leadership of the Coast Guard briefed the journalists on the organization’s active roles in Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, pollution response, anti-smuggling measures, and coastal surveillance. Inspector General Bhisham Sharma expressed pride in the increasing representation of officers from Jammu and Kashmir and their commendable performance.

DIG Ajay Chaturvedi informed that the Indian Coast Guard has so far conducted more than 4,200 missions and saved around 15,000 lives. DIG Bhanu Gupta, Officer-in-Charge of MRCC Mumbai—himself a son of Jammu—offered an in-depth briefing on MRCC’s 24×7 operations, ISRR coverage of 60%, and key aspects of international coordination. The session vividly showcased the humanitarian, environmental, and scientific roles of the Coast Guard, including missions such as the recovery of ISRO’s crew module.

Later in the day, a discussion at PIB Mumbai with Ms. S. M. Itta Wats Sharma emphasized the role of media and the country’s growing audiovisual capacity through initiatives like WAVES Summit. At the NSE, Managing Director & CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan and Chief Economist Tirthankar Patnaik shared insights on financial inclusion, the rising investor base, and the surge of investment activity in Jammu and Kashmir. The data presented enlightened participants about the importance of financial literacy, investment connectivity, and regional trade linkages.

Throughout the tour, participants shared heartfelt, grateful, and meaningful reflections:

Anil Bhat, Bureau Chief, PTI Jammu & Ladakh, wrote:

“Dear Team PIB and colleagues, it was indeed a deeply enriching and multifaceted tour that will be remembered for years—not merely for exploring Mumbai as the Maya Nagri and the financial capital of India, but for witnessing its inspiring vertical and horizontal growth journey. We return not just with memories, but with new ideas, innovations, visions, and multi-dimensional development stories that reflect the spirit of New India. Jammu and Kashmir, which is emerging from one of the most challenging phases in its history, needs precisely such ideas, innovations, and futuristic models of development to make peace, progress, and prosperity part of every individual’s dream. Journalists play a crucial role in this transformative journey; they are the torchbearers who take stories of success, innovation, and resilience back to their communities, inspiring the younger generation to craft similar positive narratives. Sensitizing them is, in fact, the beginning of a new era of progress. I am confident this initiative will have a deep impact on J&K’s socio-administrative and political perspectives and promote an environment of inclusive development as our media highlights the many dimensions of Mumbai’s growth and technological resurgence.

From conception to execution, this programme under the leadership of Ms. Neha Jalali and her dedicated team at PIB, particularly under the coordination of Mr. Rafaz Ahmad Mir, was an exemplary effort marked by meticulous planning, flawless coordination, and gracious hospitality. The journey was not only comfortable but also intellectually stimulating and deeply meaningful.

Special thanks to Ms. Smita Wits Sharma, Director General (West Zone), and all the Directors and Deputy Directors whose efforts made our stay comfortable and the institutional visits purposeful. I must also sincerely thank Mr. Manoj, Ms. J. Devi Pujari Swamy, Deputy Director PIB Mumbai, Ms. Sreyanka Chatterjee, and others for their valuable support.

It was a delightful experience to spend a week with my senior colleagues like Mr. Hashmi and Mr. Chander Mohan Ji as well as our energetic young journalists. I will always cherish the laughter, camaraderie, and those unforgettable moments—especially the now-famous word ‘Maharaz’ that became everyone’s favorite! Special congratulations and thanks to Mr. Rafaz for successfully completing the ‘mission’ of retrieving my spectacles—indeed, Mission Accomplished!”
