New Delhi,DD: In a landmark move aimed at fostering reconciliation and unity in Jammu and Kashmir, Dr. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has proposed the formation of an Inter-Community Committee to bridge the longstanding divide between Kashmiri Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits.
The announcement followed a pivotal meeting with a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits from the J K Peace Forum at Hotel JW Marriott in New Delhi on January 31, 2025.
The meeting, which lasted for over an hour and a half, was described by participants as a significant step toward addressing historical grievances and charting a course for a peaceful, inclusive future in the region.
During the dialogue, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq acknowledged the shared suffering experienced by both communities over the decades and specifically addressed the 1989-90 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, describing it as a humanitarian crisis that continues to cast a shadow over the region.
“Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits,” Mirwaiz stated. “The suffering of Kashmiri Pandits needs to be addressed earnestly, and this has been a point I have raised repeatedly in my discourses. The younger generation must be made aware of Kashmir’s composite culture.”
The Kashmiri Pandit delegation shared their own experiences of displacement, including the loss of homes and livelihoods, and the struggles of resettlement outside their homeland. They highlighted that despite the hardships, they have consistently shown solidarity with their Muslim brethren during times of crisis.
The delegation urged Mirwaiz to leverage his moral authority and influence across the region to lead this initiative, emphasizing that as Kashmir’s spiritual leader, he represents not just the Muslim community but also the region’s minorities.
The meeting culminated in an agreement to form an Inter-Community Committee under the leadership of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. The committee will represent all communities of Kashmir with a focus on:
Facilitating the safe return of Kashmiri Pandits to their homeland
Addressing the concerns of other minority communities
Promoting economic development, trade, and employment generation.
The committee will also explore government-supported initiatives for the rehabilitation of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, including the creation of inclusive colonies to aid their reintegration into Kashmiri society.
The Kashmiri Pandit delegation welcomed the proposal, describing it as a confidence-building measure that could pave the way for healing and unity in Jammu and Kashmir. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq committed to taking proactive steps toward realizing these goals, emphasizing that this collaborative effort would serve as a pathway to peace and a prosperous future for the region(DD)
