Jammu, (DD): In a compelling address during the discussion on Demand for Grants, MLA Bijbehara Dr. Bashir Veeri emphasized the transformative role of Information Technology (IT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and sports development in shaping the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
Dr. Veeri highlighted how the merger of IT and Biotechnology has made humanity more ambitious, citing global projects like Gilgamesh, which aims to conquer death by 2200 AD. Stressing the urgency for India to ease tariffs and import duties in response to U.S. pressure, he noted how technology can empower local industries, particularly agriculture.
“I have been advising orchardists to adopt scientific cultivation methods, ensuring their produce meets international standards and can compete in global markets,” Dr. Veeri stated. He also praised the government’s effort in expanding online services from 60 to 1,166 but expressed concern over operational inefficiencies, urging better implementation.
On education, he strongly advocated for the interlinking of all educational institutions—from primary schools to colleges—to address systemic gaps.
Focus on Sports, Public Health, and Drug Prevention
Dr. Veeri lauded the government’s massive investment in sports infrastructure, recognizing the region’s potential in producing national and international athletes. However, he urged greater integration of sports with public fitness programs to address rising health concerns.
“Non-communicable diseases like sudden heart attacks in young individuals and diabetes mellitus are on the rise. We must encourage fitness activities through organized public events,” he emphasized, citing the Chief Minister’s participation in the Srinagar international marathon, where he ran 21 kilometers, as an inspiring example.
He also proposed using sports as a tool for climate awareness, suggesting fitness walks and sporting events under the guardianship of local MLAs.
Highlighting the role of sports in tackling drug abuse, he stressed that engaging youth in competitive sports could serve as an effective deterrent against substance abuse.
Major Sports Infrastructure Push in Bijbehara
Dr. Veeri emphasized that his Srigufwara-Bijbehara constituency has immense sports potential, having already produced international-level players such as Parvez Rasool and Ab Qayoom Bagaw.
He proposed that Nilandruss Stadium be developed into a cricket academy to harness local talent. Additionally, while the government has already approved 18 locations for sports stadiums/playfields, he requested 22 more, stating that the Hon’ble Minister has given his consent.
“As we expand infrastructure, we must also ensure proper utilization and maintenance of sports facilities to maximize their impact on youth development,” he concluded.
Dr. Veeri’s remarks underscore the growing interconnection between technology, public health, and sports in shaping Jammu and Kashmir’s future, calling for policy implementation that translates promises into action.(DD)
