Multiple Avalanches Strike Gurez and Minimarg Amid Heavy Snowfall in Kashmir

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD) Multiple snow avalanches have hit different parts of the Kashmir Valley, particularly in the Gurez and Minimarg regions, as heavy snowfall continues to blanket the area.

In Khandiyal village of Gurez, an avalanche damaged several residential houses on Thursday. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far. Authorities have issued warnings for the region, urging residents to exercise extreme caution as the risk of further avalanches remains high due to the accumulation of fresh snow.

The heavy snowfall has severely disrupted normal life, affecting road connectivity, communication networks, and essential services. Several key roads, including the Bandipora-Gurez road, remain closed due to the hazardous conditions, leaving the region temporarily cut off. Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and local administration teams are on standby to clear the snow and restore access as soon as conditions allow.

Rescue and disaster response teams have been placed on high alert, with authorities closely monitoring avalanche-prone areas. Residents in vulnerable zones have been advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary movement.

The fresh snowfall has also intensified the cold wave across the Valley, further complicating relief efforts. The administration has assured that essential supplies, medical aid, and emergency services are being mobilised to support affected areas.

With weather conditions expected to remain harsh, officials continue to urge caution and preparedness, especially for those living in high-altitude and avalanche-prone zones(DD)
