The Department of Fisheries, Government of India, along with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), successfully hosted the Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Meet 2025 today in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
The event brought together key stakeholders from across the country, including Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying
and Panchayati Raj GOI; George Kurian Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Minority Affairs GOI; Prof. S.P Singh Baghel Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj GOI along with Secretaries, Directors, officials, fishers, fish farmers, and entrepreneurs from various inland states and Union Territories.
Representing the Union Territory of Ladakh, Stanzin Chosphel, Executive Councillor for Agriculture, LAHDC Leh, and Mohammad Ameen, AD Fisheries Kargil, actively participated in the meet.
During the program, Stanzin Chosphel gave a detailed presentation highlighting the significant progress and ongoing initiatives of the Fisheries Department in Ladakh.
He also emphasized the importance of effectively implementing the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) alongside the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), to further strengthen Ladakh’s fisheries sector.
A key highlight of the meet was the remarkable growth in Ladakh’s fish production. As presented by the Joint Secretary of Fisheries, Government of India, Ladakh recorded a staggering 424% growth in fish production over the last five years, following its formation as a Union Territory and the launch of the PMMSY scheme.
In a technical session that followed, Mohammad Ameen, AD Fisheries Kargil, provided further insights into the ground-level implementation of PMMSY in Ladakh, sharing both the successes and the challenges faced by the department.
The Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Meet 2025 served as an important platform for exchanging ideas, addressing challenges, and planning future growth for India’s inland fisheries and aquaculture sector.DD
