Copenhagen (Denmark):- It is not Russia that has given nightmares to Denmark, one of the alliance partners of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), led by the United States of America, threatening to “occupy” Greenland.
The imminent threat has directly come from the USA, creating a confusing situation for the NATO alliance countries, which were preparing against Russia in Finland, Denmark, Sweden, and Poland, of a possible threat amid the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.
NATO Caught Unprepared by Its Own Alliance, USA
Last year, the NATO alliance was busy strengthening its security grid and conducting drills around the alliance countries’ borders, claiming a threat from Russia as the war in Ukraine lingers on for the last three years, consuming thousands of innocent lives, and destroying infrastructure in Ukrainian cities and Russian strategic sites.
The fight took an ugly turn with the massive use of long-range missiles and the involvement of missionary soldiers from Russia and the Ukraine war, presenting an unstable future. As the war continues in Ukraine, a new threat has come from within to threaten the survival of NATO when US President Donald Trump claims Greenland.
From Arming Ukraine to Self-Defence
As the situation took a U-turn under these circumstances, the European countries have shown a united face against US President Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland. NATO was arming and financing Ukraine to survive the longstanding war with Russia when it was caught at a weak point by the US, and hence, this all put the security of Europe under threat, not from Russia, but from the US.
Instantly, the Naval Command and Air Force (fighter jets) have been moved to Greenland, and patrolling of the area under threat has been increased by the countries to defend the border against the US.
In response, the united European countries’ move against Trump has invited tariffs from the US Government on some of the alliance partners, including Britain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Finland, and the Netherlands.
Hesitation Within Europe Amid Stretching Tension
There is visible hesitation among the governments in European countries about how to counter the US plan in Greenland, and defend the country without firing a bullet against their own alliance partner, against whom they fought many battles from Iraq to Afghanistan.
Poor defence budget and no independent military (defence) policy have pushed them to the wall and left them with one option: to support each other to stand out against the threats from the US. Media reports have claimed that the US has cited the presence of Russia and China in the Arctic Ocean, and hence, it becomes important for the US to take over Greenland for its national security. However, the claim has been denied by some countries.
Denmark and Greenland: Greenland (an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark) is strategically located between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean. It is the world’s largest island.
