New Birmah Bridge Opens in Udhampur, Completed Ahead of Schedule

Udhampur :DD, In a significant development bringing relief to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly Udhampur residents, the newly constructed Birmah bridge has been inaugurated and opened for 24/7 traffic. The bridge replaces the previous structure that was damaged by floods and heavy rainfall approximately five years ago. The Border Roads Task Force, an Indian Army’s specialized road construction unit of the Border Roads Organization, finished the project before the scheduled completion date of June 2025.

The inauguration ceremony was conducted with traditional rituals by BRTF 35 Udhampur officers, led by Commander S.K Singh. The bridge’s history dates back to 2020 when flash floods and heavy rains caused substantial damage to the original structure, severely impacting local connectivity and daily life.

To address immediate concerns, the BRTF had implemented a temporary solution in August 2021 by constructing two Bailey bridges on the old Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. However, a permanent solution was essential for long-term sustainability.

The government initiated the construction of the new Birmah Bridge at its original location in 2022, completing it at an estimated cost of ₹15 crore. This infrastructure project is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of people in the region.

Local residents have expressed their gratitude to the Government of India, particularly acknowledging Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh, and the District Administration for their role in completing this vital infrastructure project.

The bridge’s completion has brought joy to the local business community, students, and thousands of daily commuters who had long awaited this development. The new structure now serves as a crucial link in the region’s transportation network, facilitating smoother connectivity and economic activities.DD
