New criminal laws enhance transparency, Public accountability: SSP Srinagar

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, (DD): Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain Mir, today stated that new criminal laws will ensure a more transparent, accountable, and citizen-centric justice system.

Speaking on the sidelines of an awareness program in Srinagar, SSP Mir highlighted the significance of the transition from the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), calling it a major legal reform aimed at making the justice system more accessible to the people.

To ensure that people understand the implications of the new laws, the Jammu and Kashmir Police will conduct awareness programs every 15 days. These sessions aim to educate citizens about the key provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—which collectively replace colonial-era criminal laws.

SSP Mir stressed that public participation is crucial in making these laws effective. By improving transparency and accountability, the reformed legal system will empower citizens and enhance trust in law enforcement agencies.

Major Changes in the New Criminal Laws

The new legal framework introduces several progressive reforms:

Faster justice delivery: Strengthening case management and reducing delays.

Greater accountability: Clearer procedures for police investigations and trials.

Technology integration: Increased use of digital evidence and forensic science in investigations.

Victim-centric approach: Better safeguards for victims, including women and marginalized communities.(DD)
