Srinagar,(DD): In a landmark move to empower women and ensure their safety in public transportation, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today inaugurated a free female special bus service at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar. The new initiative, designed to provide a safe and convenient travel option for women, is expected to make daily commutes more accessible and secure for female passengers.

Speaking at the inauguration, Omar Abdullah highlighted the importance of women’s safety and independence in the public sphere. “This initiative reflects our government’s ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for women in Kashmir. We are committed to providing women with the tools and opportunities to move freely and safely within our city,” he said.

The service, which will be available free of charge, will operate along a designated route in Srinagar, covering key areas such as Dal Lake, Rajbagh, and Lal Chowk, where many women commute for work, education, and other activities. The buses will be equipped with all the necessary safety features to ensure the comfort and security of female passengers.

Locals have expressed strong support for the new service.

“This is a great relief for women in the city. It will help ensure that we can travel without worrying about safety concerns,” said Farah Ali, a university student.

“As a working woman, I feel more secure knowing that there is a dedicated service just for us. It will make my daily commute a lot easier,” said Shabana Khan, a government employee.

The female special bus service is part of a broader initiative by the Jammu and Kashmir government to enhance women’s participation in the workforce and society, while also addressing issues of public safety and convenience.

Officials expect the service to be widely used, with plans to expand the network to other parts of Srinagar in the future.

This move aligns with broader national goals of advancing gender equality and fostering women’s empowerment, both in the public and private spheres.(DD)
