Omar Abdullah urges Election Commission to clarify stance on foreign influence in polls

Diplomat Correspondent

Jammu, (DD): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called on the Election Commission (EC) to provide a clear stance on concerns regarding foreign influence in India’s electoral process.

His statement comes at a time when discussions on safeguarding democratic institutions from external interference are gaining momentum.

Omar’s remarks highlight apprehensions that foreign entities may attempt to shape voter sentiment, influence political parties, or manipulate the election process through covert means. In recent years, countries across the world have witnessed various forms of election interference, including foreign funding, disinformation campaigns, and cyber influence operations targeting political narratives. Given these global developments, ensuring that India’s elections remain free from external manipulation is of paramount importance.

While India has stringent laws regulating political funding and electioneering, concerns about indirect foreign influence—particularly through digital media, lobbying, and anonymous donations—persist. With the rise of artificial intelligence and sophisticated propaganda techniques, experts warn that electoral systems must remain vigilant against potential threats.

As the country prepares for crucial elections, Omar’s call for the EC’s response reflects the need for greater transparency and public confidence in the electoral process. His demand aligns with a broader push to strengthen democratic safeguards and reinforce institutional accountability. A prompt and clear statement from the EC could help address these concerns, ensuring that India’s democracy remains resilient against any external attempts at disruption.(DD)
