He emphasized that a truly democratic society cannot exist without a free and fearless press.

Calling the free press the “cornerstone of a vibrant democracy,” Omar urged for collective responsibility in ensuring the protection and independence of journalists. “We must protect it, not just in words, but in action,” he asserted, highlighting the growing global concerns around press freedom and the safety of media professionals.

In a post shared on social media platform X, the Chief Minister wrote: “On #WorldPressFreedomDay, we honour the courage and commitment of journalists who speak truth to power. We must protect it, not just in words, but in action.”

His message comes at a time when press freedom in conflict regions like Jammu and Kashmir remains a sensitive and critical issue. Journalists in the region often work under immense pressure, facing threats, censorship, and restricted access to information. Omar’s remarks serve as a call to uphold journalistic integrity and to foster an environment where media can operate freely without fear or favour.
