Jammu,(DD): The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced significant progress in the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), with over 28,000 houses completed and handed over to beneficiaries across the Union Territory. Officials say efforts are underway to fast-track the construction of remaining units to meet the housing demand in urban areas.

During a recent assembly session, MLA Irshad Rasool Kar sought an update on the scheme’s implementation. In response, the government stated that under PMAY(U)-1.0, a total of 42,585 beneficiaries were identified, out of which 28,068 houses have been fully constructed and handed over to eligible families. The remaining houses are in various stages of completion, with authorities working on accelerating construction to fulfill the scheme’s objectives.

Meanwhile, under the new phase, PMAY(U)-2.0, the government has introduced an online registration process for urban poor and middle-class families belonging to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Lower Income Group (LIG), and Middle-Income Group (MIG) categories. This initiative is being implemented through the Unified Web Portal of the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, ensuring a transparent and streamlined application process for aspiring homeowners.

So far, 8,079 new beneficiaries have registered under PMAY(U)-2.0. Their details are currently under verification, and once approved, they will be eligible for financial assistance and housing benefits under the scheme.

The government has reiterated its commitment to providing affordable housing and has assured that the scheme is being closely monitored to prevent delays. Officials emphasized that strict supervision and coordinated efforts will continue to ensure that urban families in Jammu and Kashmir can access safe and dignified housing at the earliest (DD)
