Srinagar, (TDD): In a decisive blow to drug trafficking in the region, Srinagar Police have seized 8 kilograms of heroin and arrested two suspected traffickers during a checkpoint operation at Barthana crossing, Qamarwari in Srinagar.
Police said that acting on routine checks, a police team intercepted a Tata Sumo (Registration No. JK05D-1837) and discovered 6 kilograms of heroin concealed beneath the driver’s seat. A further 2 kilograms of the narcotic substance were found during a personal search of the suspects, with each carrying 1 kilogram in polythene bags.
The arrested individuals have been identified as:
Anas Ajaz Awan, son of Ajaz Ahmad Awan, resident of Dildar Tanghdar, Kupwara and Zahid Ahmad Sheikh, son of Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, resident of Channipora, Tangdar, Kupwara.
The vehicle and narcotics have been seized as evidence, and an FIR (No. 03/2025) under sections 8/21 and 29 of the NDPS Act has been registered at Police Station Parimpora.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the seized heroin was smuggled from Pakistan as part of a cross-border drug trafficking network. The police are now tracing both the backward and forward linkages of the syndicate to dismantle its operations and bring all culprits to justice.
Reaffirming their zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, the J&K Police have urged citizens to support their efforts in combating drug trafficking. The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or by dialing 112.
This operation underscores the police’s commitment to ensuring a drug-free society and protecting the community from the scourge of narcotics.(TDD)
