Jammu, (DD) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today distanced himself from the recent police action against protesting daily wagers, stating in the Assembly that “the police are not in my control.”
He acknowledged the plight of daily wagers, calling it a “humanitarian issue” that requires urgent attention.
The statement came amid heated discussions in the House following a police lathi charge on daily wage workers demanding regularization of their jobs. The incident triggered strong reactions from both the opposition and members of the treasury benches.
Opposition leaders questioned the government’s stance, accusing it of failing to protect workers’ rights. Meanwhile, Omar assured the Assembly that his administration is committed to finding a resolution, urging all parties to approach the issue with “compassion rather than politics.”
As protests continue, the government faces mounting pressure to address the demands of thousands of daily wage workers across Jammu and Kashmir.(DD)
