Sopore,DD: Former Hurriyat leader Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, aged 89, passed away at his residence in Botingoo Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday evening after a brief illness.
Family sources said that Bhat passed away yesterday evening after remaining ill from past week.
Bhat, a prominent political figure for several decades, co-founded the Muslim United Front (MUF) in 1986 and later served as chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), a coalition of separatist groups formed in 1993.
He also remained president of the Muslim Conference, Jammu and Kashmir (MCJK), a faction later banned by the Government of India.
According to the family, details regarding his funeral prayers will be announced later. (KNC)
