Ramban Tragedy a Major Natural Disaster, Says Dr Farooq Abdullah

Calls on PM Modi, Centre for Urgent Intervention and Relocation of Affected Families

Jammu, (DD): National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah has described the recent cloudburst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district as a “major natural disaster,” urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India to take immediate cognisance of the calamity.

Addressing reporters in Jammu on Monday, Dr Abdullah expressed deep concern over the destruction caused by the disaster, which led to the collapse of an entire village. “We still do not know the full extent of what happened inside, but it is undoubtedly a grave calamity,” he said.

The NC chief emphasised the need for urgent rehabilitation of those affected, stating that the area is no longer suitable for habitation. “These families must be relocated to safer ground. We cannot ignore the reality that their homes are gone, and the land is unstable,” he said.

The disaster, triggered by a sudden cloudburst on Sunday followed by heavy rainfall, unleashed flash floods and landslides in parts of Ramban, particularly in the Seri and Maitra areas. The incident claimed at least three lives, left many stranded, and rendered several families homeless.

In response, rescue and relief operations were promptly initiated by the Indian Army and the civil administration. Quick Reaction Teams, heavy machinery, and rescue personnel have been deployed to assist the affected population and clear debris.

National Highway 44 (NH-44), a vital corridor connecting Jammu with Srinagar, was severely damaged and remains closed. Restoration efforts are underway and are expected to take more than 72 hours.

Dr Abdullah called for compassion and urgency in the Centre’s response, adding, “This is not just a local issue. It is a humanitarian crisis that demands national attention.” (DD)
