Kishtwar,(DD) Tensions flared in Baghwan Mohalla as residents staged a protest against the installation of smart electricity meters, demanding an immediate rollback of the project. Demonstrators, including men, women, and elderly citizens, gathered in large numbers, expressing concerns over the financial burden and alleged lack of transparency in the process.

“We are already struggling with high electricity bills. These smart meters will only make things worse for us,” said Abdul Majid, a local shopkeeper. “The government should first ensure 24/7 power supply before forcing these meters on us.”

Another resident, Shakeela Begum, voiced similar concerns, saying, “Many of us are daily wage workers. If bills skyrocket, how will we afford basic necessities? We are not against modernization, but this should not come at the cost of the common people’s livelihood.”

The protests in Baghwan Mohalla are part of a larger wave of opposition against smart meter installations in various parts of Kishtwar. Recent demonstrations at Hidyal Chowk and Umar Mohalla saw similar public outcry, with residents blocking roads and demanding direct engagement with officials.

Authorities have yet to issue a formal response, but sources suggest that power department officials may hold discussions with locals to address their grievances. Meanwhile, the protesters have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met.

The situation remains tense, with residents urging the administration to reconsider its approach and provide alternative solutions that do not disproportionately impact lower-income households(DD)
