Sajjad Kargili Questions Ladakh’s Development, Flags Unmet Promises

Diplomat Correspondent

Jammu,(DD): Ladakhi leader Sajjad Kargili has raised serious concerns over the slow progress of key infrastructure projects and the lack of democratic representation in Ladakh, challenging the government’s claims of rapid development in the region.

In a social media post, Kargili questioned why projects like the Turtuk-Hanu Road and the full operationalisation of Kargil Airport—which is capable of handling C-130 aircraft—have yet to be completed.

Beyond infrastructure, he highlighted critical governance and employment issues, stating that:
Not a single gazetted post has been filled in the last six years, leaving Ladakhi youth without opportunities.
Ladakh has been deprived of a legislative assembly for the first time since independence.
Ambiguities in power-sharing between local councils and the UT administration have caused governance conflicts.
Budget cuts and exclusion of elected representatives from decision-making have raised concerns about participatory governance.

Kargili emphasised that true development must extend beyond infrastructure, calling for institutional reforms, economic empowerment, and democratic accountability to ensure Ladakh’s progress aligns with local aspirations. His remarks have reignited debate on Ladakh’s political and developmental future.(DD)
