Srinagar, July 29(DD): Senior IPS officer Syed Javaid Mujtaba Gilani has been empanelled for holding Director General (DG)-level posts in the Government of India, marking a significant milestone in his distinguished career in the Indian Police Service.
An officer of the 1994 batch belonging to the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh–Goa–Mizoram–Union Territory) cadre, Gilani’s empanelment was officially approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs in December 2024. With this development, he is now eligible to be appointed as a Director General in any Central Police Organisation or equivalent rank in the security and law enforcement apparatus of the country.
Gilani, who has held several key positions in Jammu and Kashmir, was subsequently posted as Special Director General (Coordination), Police Headquarters (PHQ) in May 2025, a move that reflects the government’s trust in his leadership and experience.
Known for his professional competence and strategic acumen, SJM Gilani has served in various capacities including Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone, and has also headed sensitive operations during crucial periods of unrest in the region.
His empanelment comes as a recognition of not only his seniority and service record but also his ability to handle complex policing challenges, especially in conflict-prone areas.
With this elevation, Gilani joins the league of top police officers eligible to lead national-level security institutions, signaling potential for future appointments at the highest levels of policing in India.(DD)
