Srinagar, (TDD): A fresh wave of snowfall swept across Kashmir on Tuesday morning, painting the region in pristine white and transforming its higher reaches into a breathtaking winter wonderland.

While the upper altitudes received substantial snow, the plains and lower areas saw light to moderate accumulation, ushering in the charm of peak winter.

In Pulwama district’s Rajpora tehsil, Sangerwani emerged as the snowiest spot, recording 4 inches of snow that blanketed the landscape. Abhama followed closely with 3.5–4 inches, and Achgoza registered 3 inches of accumulation. Cb Nath received a moderate snowfall of 1 inch, while villages like Drabgam, Rajpora, Shadimarg and Rahmoo saw only a dusting, with barely measurable traces.

The picturesque Shopian town was adorned with 1 to 2 inches of snow, creating a thin yet stunning cover that delighted its residents and amplified its scenic allure.

In Budgam district, Khan Sahib recorded 2 inches of snowfall, while Bandipora Plains and Vailoo Kokernag experienced light snowfalls with minimal accumulation.

The higher reaches were hit by a heavier snowstorm, with Zojila Pass receiving over 10 inches of snow and Sonamarg, a beloved tourist destination, blanketed in 8 to 10 inches. This heavy snowfall has enhanced the appeal of these areas but also disrupted connectivity. The Srinagar-Leh highway was temporarily closed due to slippery conditions, leaving travelers stranded and prompting efforts to restore the vital road link.

In Kupwara district, Hachmarg recorded a modest snowfall of 1 to 2 inches, with other parts receiving light snow.

While the snowfall brought joy to locals and boosted hopes for a thriving winter tourism season, it also came with challenges. Authorities have urged caution on snow-covered roads, particularly in high-altitude areas, as slippery conditions pose risks.

In Srinagar, the city remained dry but endured a frosty morning, with icy conditions adding to the chill.

The snowfall is expected to replenish water reserves vital for agriculture and daily needs, a positive sign amid the onset of harsh winter. For residents, the snow is both a symbol of the Valley’s timeless beauty and a reminder of the challenges that come with life in the mountains. (TDD)
