Sopore MLA demands Joint SIT Probe Into Disappearance of Kashmiri Trader in Delhi

Srinagar, (DD):Expressing serious concern over the prolonged disappearance of a Sopore-based trader in Delhi, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Sopore, Irshad Rasool Kaar, has formally urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and constitute a Joint Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a swift and transparent probe.

The missing individual, Shabir Ahmad Shah, aged 35, son of the late Ghulam Nabi Shah, has been untraceable since 16 February 2025, when he reportedly checked out of the Continental Hotel in the national capital. A General Diary entry (GD No. 0025A) was lodged at Police Station Nabi Karim, Central District, Delhi, on 20 February, yet the investigation has seen little to no progress.

In a written communication to the Chief Minister, Irshad Rasool Kaar highlighted the family’s anguish and raised alarm over the lack of responsiveness from the investigating authorities. “Despite multiple follow-ups by the family, there has been no substantial development in tracing Mr Shah, nor have they received any clear update from the Delhi Police,” the letter states.

The MLA further pointed out that the delay in the investigation is causing heightened distress among the family and wider community. “It is deeply troubling that even after nearly two months, there appears to be no headway. The silence surrounding the case raises serious concerns about the efficacy and sensitivity of the ongoing probe,” he wrote.

Calling for urgent action, Kaar appealed to the Chief Minister to constitute a Joint SIT comprising senior officers from the Jammu & Kashmir Police, Delhi Police, and relevant central agencies. “Given the sensitive nature of the case and the growing anxiety among the public, a multi-agency approach would not only ensure transparency but also restore faith in the system,” he urged.

He also requested that the Delhi Police be directed to expedite their investigation and maintain regular communication with the victim’s family.

“This is not merely a legal matter—it is a humanitarian one. Your prompt intervention could bring solace to a grieving family and uphold the principles of justice and accountability,” the letter concluded.
