Srinagar Smart City Installs 1,000 Cameras to streamline traffic, enforce rules

Srinagar, (TDD): The Srinagar Smart City project has installed over 1,000 high-tech cameras across the city as part of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) to enhance road safety and curb traffic violations, CEO Owais Ahmad said today.

Speaking to reporters, Ahmad highlighted that the cameras are equipped to detect a range of violations, including the absence of seatbelts, non-compliance with helmet laws, mobile phone usage while driving, and signal jumping. Speed monitoring will also be added to the system in the coming days.

“On the very first day, the system issued 102 challans. Once a vehicle’s number plate is captured, the system automatically generates a challan, and drivers are required to follow the payment process,” Ahmad explained.

Currently, ITMS is operational at 33 out of 66 identified traffic junctions in Srinagar. The remaining signals are temporarily non-functional due to technical issues, but efforts are underway to resolve them and achieve full functionality soon.

The ITMS utilizes advanced technology, including high-resolution cameras and radar sensors, to monitor traffic in real-time. The collected data is processed using sophisticated algorithms to provide instant insights into traffic patterns and enforce regulations effectively.

Ahmad expressed optimism that the ITMS would not only ensure smoother traffic flow but also significantly improve compliance with traffic rules in Srinagar. (TDD)
