Kathua,DD, In a significant crackdown, the district administration Kathua has successfully imposed a complete ban on illegal mining activities in the River Ravi.
Following the strict measures taken by the authorities, a noticeable silence now prevails along the riverbanks—clear evidence that the administration’s action has severely crippled the illegal mining mafia.
The crackdown was initiated after Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Dr. Rakesh Minhas, received a series of complaints regarding rampant illegal mining.
Taking serious note of these complaints, the administration responded promptly and effectively, the results of which are now visibly evident.
Previously, large quantities of mining material were being extracted secretly under the cover of darkness along the banks of the Ravi River.
The materials were then smuggled via trucks to Punjab and other states. However, such unlawful operations have now come to a complete standstill.
In a recent joint operation by the district administration and the mining department, 33 vehicles illegally transporting mining material towards Punjab were seized. The investigation into the matter is still ongoing. Additionally, two excavators and two dumpers used in the illicit activities have also been confiscated.
These actions have instilled fear among those involved in illegal mining. Under the leadership of newly appointed District Mineral Officer (DMO) Vishal Dogra, the mining department teams are conducting round-the-clock raids at various locations. As a result, most of the stone crushers operating near the Ravi River have been completely shut down.
Reports suggest that agents responsible for loading trucks destined for Punjab have also fled the area. Moreover, following the directions of DC Kathua, CCTV cameras have been installed at several sensitive locations to strengthen surveillance and ensure strict monitoring.
This campaign by the district administration is being seen as a commendable step towards curbing illegal mining. It is hoped that such stringent measures will continue in the future, helping to maintain environmental balance and protect valuable natural resources.DD
