Sub-Divisional-Level Flying Squad Meet To Identify & monitor waste dumping sites around Indus River

Diplomat Correspondent

Khaltse:DD, In accordance with the decision taken during the interactive Goba meeting chaired by the Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, a meeting of the Sub-Divisional Flying Squad was convened on July 25, 2025, at the office of the SDM Khaltse.

The meeting focused on identifying and monitoring waste dumping sites in and around the Indus River in preparation for the cleanliness drive scheduled for August 2, 2025.

The meeting was attended by all members of the Flying Squad constituted by the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Leh, for the Indus River cleanliness initiative.

Key attendees included Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Khaltse, Mohd Sharif; Hon’ble Councillor Khaltse, Lobzang Sherab; Station House Officer (SHO) Khaltse, Jamyang Namgail; BDO Khaltse, Pankaj Rajput; Forest Range Officer Khaltse, Deskyong Namgyal; JCO Harjit Singh; MO, Ashutosh Dirit; BRO; ITBF; and concerned Nambardars from Skurbuchan, Lehdoo, Temisgam, Skindiyang, Takmachik, Urbis, Nurla, Wanla, Tar, and Dha/Bema villages.

An extensive discussion was held on identifying and monitoring waste dumping sites along the river. Participants shared valuable suggestions and raised concerns to ensure the success of the cleanliness initiative. The Flying Squad unanimously resolved to maintain the cleanliness of the Indus River and its tributaries.

The team decided to conduct a field visit along the Indus River — from Tar/Hepti up to Dha — to locate garbage disposal points and areas where wastewater, including from washrooms or septic tanks, may be flowing into the river and causing pollution. Appropriate measures will be taken to eliminate such sources of contamination.

To streamline coordination, a WhatsApp group will be created including all Flying Squad members. This will facilitate preparations for the August 2 drive and enable real-time sharing of complaints and updates related to Indus River pollution.

SDM Mohd Sharif explained the details of the cleanliness drive, emphasizing the importance of identifying waste dumping sites in advance and conducting regular inspections. He also advised all members to compulsorily participate in the upcoming field visit and the cleanliness drive itself.

Hon’ble Councillor Lobzang Sherab also underscored the need for proactive monitoring and early identification of waste disposal areas. He urged all stakeholders to ensure active participation in the upcoming drive to preserve the ecological health of the Indus River.

The meeting was also attended by Naib Tehsildars Asgar Ali (Khaltse), Abdul Samad (Skurbuchan), Phuntsog Namgyal (Wanla), and Mohd Iqbal (Temisgam).DD
