Jammu, (DD): In a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), senior Congress leader and J&K Assembly Speaker Tariq Hameed Karra on Thursday challenged the opposition to bring a no-confidence motion if they do not trust the Speaker. His remarks came amid chaos in the Assembly, where BJP members protested against the Speaker’s handling of proceedings.
Addressing reporters outside the Assembly, Karra criticized the BJP for disrupting the House, which is convening after seven years, calling it a historic moment for democracy in J&K.
“This House is functional after seven years, and it’s unfortunate that the BJP is creating uproar instead of participating in meaningful discussions,” he said.
Warning Against Disrespecting July 13 Martyrs
Karra also warned the BJP against disrespecting the martyrs of July 13, 1931, a day observed as Martyrs’ Day in Jammu and Kashmir.
“If BJP wants to disrespect the July 13 martyrs, then digging into the past can bring out many skeletons,” he said, hinting at controversial historical episodes that could be revisited if the BJP continues to challenge the legacy of the martyrs.
The remarks are expected to intensify political tensions between the ruling Congress-NC alliance and the BJP opposition, as the newly functional J&K Assembly navigates its early days.(DD)
