Baramulla:DD, A 17-year-old boy from Singpora area of Pattan in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district lost his life on Wednesday morning after being critically injured while extracting sand from a riverbed, officials said.

According to police sources, the teenager sustained grievous head injuries late Tuesday night while he and others were reportedly engaged in sand extraction activity.
He was immediately rushed to JVC Hospital, Bemina, in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Amjaad Hamid, a resident of Singpora, Pattan.
Locals described the incident as deeply tragic and urged authorities to regulate unmonitored sand extraction activities that have become common along riverbanks in the area.

“We often see young boys involved in sand and gravel extraction due to poverty and lack of alternative livelihood. These activities are dangerous, especially at night,” said a local resident, adding that safety measures are seldom followed.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident and initiated proceedings to ascertain the circumstances that led to the mishap. Officials said further investigation is underway. [KNT]
