Jammu, DD: In a landmark move under the BNS (New Criminal Laws), Jammu Police in Police Station Akhnoor has led to the conviction of a person namely Yash Pal, resident of Sua Number -1, Tehsil Bhalwal, Jammu and two persons in Police Post Gajansoo has led to the conviction of two persons namely Surat Singh, son of Karan Singh, resident of Saharan, Tehsil – Marh Jammu and Sushil Sharma, son of Mahesh Chander, resident of Gajansoo Tehsil Marh, Jammu for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. The Court of JMIC Akhnoor and 3rd Additional Munsiff JMIC, Jammu delivered the verdict today, marking a progressive step towards reformative justice. The two separate incidents took place within the jurisdiction of the Police Station Akhnoor and Police Post Gajansoo, where the accused persons were found intoxicated and creating a public disturbance. They were promptly arrested, subjected to a medical examination, and presented before the concerned Judicial Magistrates.Rather than imposing traditional imprisonment, the court opted for community service as a corrective measure. Yash Pal has been directed to perform community service at Gaushala in Akhnoor for one hour daily for 10 days while Surat Singh and Sushil Sharma have been directed to perform community service at Shri Baba Jitto ji Temple Jhiri two hours daily for one week. This provision under the new criminal laws emphasizes rehabilitation and community engagement for minor offenses, promoting reform over punishment. The effort by Jammu Police demonstrates a shift toward a more constructive approach in addressing public misdemeanours, setting a precedent for similar cases in the future. DD
