Authorities warn of rising water levels; South Kashmir braces for heavy downpour

Jammu, DD: The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Tuesday sounded a flood alert for parts of the Jammu region as very heavy rainfall lashed several districts, raising water levels in streams and rivers above danger marks.
According to officials, the heaviest showers were recorded in Kathua, Samba, Doda, Jammu, Ramban, and Kishtwar, with downpours expected to continue till late evening. “The situation remains critical, and further rise in water levels is likely tonight,” an official source said.
In South Kashmir, the weather office has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall across the plains and very heavy spells in higher reaches, which may add to the swelling of the Jhelum. Although the river is expected to rise, no flood warning has been issued for the Valley at present.
Central Kashmir is likely to experience light to moderate showers, while North Kashmir is expected to see only brief spells of rain or largely dry weather.
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and avoid venturing close to water bodies. Rescue and relief teams have been placed on standby in flood-prone districts(DD)
