Baramulla, (DD): A family outing ended in tragedy on Sunday evening after four members of a Srinagar-based family drowned in the River Jhelum near the NHPC canal at Gantmulla in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

According to officials, the family was enjoying a picnic by the riverside when two children accidentally slipped into the fast-flowing river. In a desperate attempt to save them, two other family members jumped in, but they too were swept away by the strong current.

A local resident heroically intervened and managed to rescue one individual. However, the lifeless body of one minor was later recovered. The remaining two — reportedly a child and an adult — are still unaccounted for.

The rescued person was shifted to Boniyar Hospital for medical attention and legal formalities.

A major search and rescue operation has been launched, involving the police, SDRF teams, and local volunteers. Divers have been deployed and the operation continued late into the evening.

Station House Officer (SHO) Boniyar confirmed the incident, stating that every possible effort is being made to trace the missing persons. Identification details of the victims are currently being verified(DD)
