Udhampur:TDD, Dussehra, a vibrant Indian festival, is celebrated with great pomp and show every year on the tenth day of Navratri. This auspicious day marks the victory of good over evil and is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. The festival commemorates the triumph of Lord Rama over the ten-headed demon king, Ravana.
The Epic Tale of Rama and Ravana
According to Hindu mythology, after fourteen years of exile, Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, abducted Sita, Lord Rama’s wife. To rescue Sita, Rama, along with his brother Lakshmana and an army of monkeys led by Hanuman, embarked on a perilous journey to Lanka. After a fierce battle, Rama finally killed Ravana on the tenth day of Navratri. This day is celebrated as Dussehra to symbolize the victory of righteousness over wickedness.
One of the most prominent rituals of Dussehra is the burning of Ravana’s, Meghnath and Kumb karna effigy. This act signifies the symbolic destruction of evil forces and the triumph of good. The effigy, often depicted as a monstrous figure, is filled with combustible materials and set ablaze amidst much fanfare. The burning of the effigy is accompanied by fireworks and celebrations.
A Celebration of Durga Puja
Dussehra is also closely associated with Durga Puja, another significant Hindu festival. According to legend, Goddess Durga fought and killed the demon Mahishasura on the tenth day of Navratri. Thus, Dussehra also marks the victory of Goddess Durga over evil. In many regions, the immersion of Durga idols takes place on Dussehra, symbolizing the return of the goddess to her heavenly abode.
The celebration of Dussehra extends beyond religious beliefs. It is a time for families and communities to come together, exchange gifts, and enjoy festive meals. The festival also carries social and cultural significance, promoting values such as courage, righteousness, and unity.
Dussehra is more than just a festival; it is a timeless tradition that continues to inspire millions of people across the globe. The legend of Rama and Ravana serves as a powerful reminder that good always prevails over evil.TDD
