Jammu: The two-day National Conference on “Biodiversity and Climate Change: Challenges and Solutions” concluded today with the valedictory function marked by insightful deliberations and academic reflections. The valedictory session was graced by Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Dean Research Studies, as the Chief Guest, while Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, Dean Life Sciences adorned the occasion as the Guest of Honour.

In her valedictory address, Prof. Neelu Rohmetra highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research and emphasized the role of such academic platforms in addressing contemporary environmental and societal challenges. Further, she spoke that taking small steps like switching the lights off, using the garbage bins, fixing leakage of taps etc. can bring a big change in the battle to combat climate change. Reducing our carbon footprint doesn’t mean overhauling our lifestyle. Try walking or biking more, choosing reusable items, cutting down on energy use at home, and adding more plant-based meals to the diet are some small steps to halt these menace. These mindful changes help create a cleaner, greener planet for everyone. Prof. Yash Pal Sharma, in his address, appreciated the quality of research presentations and encouraged young scholars to pursue impactful and socially relevant research. Professor Sharma likely emphasized the critical importance of collaborative research in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as these goals are complex and interconnected, requiring interdisciplinary approaches. Addressing issues like clean energy (SDG 7), sustainable consumption (SDG 12), and poverty (SDG 1) directly reduces emissions, builds resilience, and creates co-benefits for a liveable planet, with SDG 13 (Climate Action) specifically driving these efforts through integrated policy and action.
