Srinagar,(DD): In a continued crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Srinagar Police has booked two notorious drug smugglers under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (PIT-NDPS Act) and lodged them in District Jail Udhampur.
The accused have been identified as:
- Danish Mushtaq Hafiz, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Hafiz, resident of Natipora and presently at Shaheen Colony, Allochibagh — involved in FIR No. 88/2022 under Sections 8/21 NDPS Act of Police Station Saddar.
- Hamid Jan Sheikh, alias Hamid Koon, son of Reyaz Ahmad Sheikh, resident of Madawpora, Allochibagh — involved in FIR No. 23/2022 under Sections 8/20, 21 NDPS Act of Police Station Shergarhi.
Formal detention orders were obtained on the basis of dossiers prepared by Srinagar Police detailing their sustained involvement in narcotics peddling, particularly targeting youth in the city. Police said both men were habitual offenders who continued drug trafficking despite multiple arrests and bail in earlier cases.
Authorities have also initiated proceedings to attach properties belonging to the duo under PIT-NDPS provisions.
Police noted that the two were part of a wider illegal network promoting drug abuse across Srinagar and emphasised that similar action has been taken against numerous traffickers as part of an ongoing drive to dismantle the city’s narcotics infrastructure.
“J&K Police remains committed to eradicating the drug menace with the full force of law,” a police spokesperson said, warning that those involved in the trade would be caught and prosecuted. Citizens have been urged to share information on drug dealers or peddlers with the nearest police station or PCR to help build a safer and healthier community(DD)
