Udhampur :TDD, The district police of Udhampur have succeeded miraculously in their campaign against narcotics during 2024. Under the Supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Udhampur Amod Ashok Nagpure, law enforcement officials had filed 77 First Information Reports (FIRs) and arrested more than 100 people allegedly found to be involved in activities related to drugs, January to December 2024.

The comprehensive operation, as part of Jammu and Kashmir Police’s mission against substance abuse, has brought in considerable results towards a “Drug-free Udhampur.” In a significant development, the authorities have successfully confiscated four properties illegally acquired by drug peddlers and taken stern action against six hardcore drug peddlers under PITSNDPS (Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act).

SSP Amod Ashok Nagpure said that the department worked strategically, and after analysis, it was identified that there were 12 drug hubs in the district. The police have made a high-tech digital surveillance system and maintained a detailed database on suspicious financial transactions and e-wallet activities of suspected drug peddlers. Special teams have been formed to catch absconding suspects, which have concentrated on interstate and inter-district drug trafficking networks.

It extended the campaign beyond drug enforcement to include bovine smuggling. Impressive results include thwarting 311 attempts at smuggling, rescuing 2,934 animals, and arresting 319 people. Authorities have confiscated 271 vehicles, with proceedings initiated to cancel the registration of 42 in coordination with the RTO.

To further enhance community involvement, SSP Nagpure took the innovative step of circulating his personal contact number with the public, thereby allowing for better police-public relations and direct communication channels regarding tips on criminal activities. The district has established eight major checkpoints along the Highway and Dhar Road with CCTV surveillance and two dedicated officers.

The initiative is in line with the Government of India’s “Nasha Mukt Bharat” (Drug-free India) campaign where a zero-tolerance policy has been adopted against peddlers. The police force has joined hands with other departments to conduct an awareness camp, sports, and community programs to get the message across that eradicating drugs from a society requires collective action.

With these broad measures and an approach of working for the community, the Udhampur Police maintain their aggressive push towards this goal to transform the district into a narcotics free and crime-free zone-an example to be emulated by other regions in battling narcotics and organized crime.TDD
