Kishtwar, (DD): In response to the alarming outbreak of a mysterious disease that has killed at least 16 domestic cattle in Brayan village of Warwan valley in Kishtwar district, a team of expert veterinary doctors has reached the remote region to assess and control the situation.
The move came after Diplomat Digital’s July 18 report brought the crisis to light, prompting swift action from district authorities. The disease, which has left more than 35 animals critically ill, has sparked panic among residents who depend heavily on livestock for sustenance and income.
“We have already lost 16 animals in Brayan. Many others are very sick. This has left the entire village in shock,” said Farooq Ahmed Hajam, a local resident.
According to villagers, the illness spread rapidly across Brayan and adjacent hamlets, with livestock displaying unexplained symptoms. Locals say the disease shows no sign of slowing down.
The veterinary team, dispatched by the Animal Husbandry Department, has been going door to door in the affected villages, examining animals, administering emergency medication, and advising residents on preventive measures.
“They’ve not only given medicines but also educated us on how to prevent further infections,” a resident told Diplomat Digital.
The team continues to monitor the situation closely.
Sources said that samples from infected cattle have been collected for lab testing to identify the pathogen.
Officials urged villagers to immediately report new cases and avoid the movement of infected livestock to limit the spread.
The Warwan valley, known for its remoteness and limited infrastructure, remains vulnerable in emergencies like this. Residents have appealed for the establishment of a permanent veterinary care unit in the area to avoid delays in future interventions.
This incident highlights the importance of prompt communication and action, with local journalism once again playing a crucial role in drawing attention to rural crises.(DD)
