Srinagar, (DD)The first batch of Shri Amarnath Yatra pilgrims arrived in Qazigund today to a heartfelt welcome from locals, as the annual pilgrimage commenced under tight security and traditional Kashmiri hospitality.

Officials said the initial group comprises 5,485 pilgrims, with 2,347 heading towards the holy cave via the Baltal route and 3,138 via Pahalgam. The Baltal convoy departed at 5:20 am, followed by the Pahalgam convoy at 6:04 am.

The batch includes 4,395 men, 1,043 women, 31 children, and 16 sadhus, traveling in 299 vehicles—162 via Baltal and 137 via Pahalgam. The fleet consisted of 113 buses (48 on the Baltal route and 65 on the Pahalgam route), along with 42 medium motor vehicles (MMVs) and 144 light motor vehicles (LMVs).

Pilgrims received a warm reception at the Navyug Tunnel, where locals greeted them with traditional gestures. Social activist M. Iqbal Ahmager said, “Kashmir has always been known for its hospitality. We are here to welcome and protect every yatri throughout their spiritual journey.”

BJP leader Ravinder Raina, who witnessed the reception, applauded the enthusiasm of local youth. “The active participation of Kashmiri youth in welcoming yatris reflects the true spirit of brotherhood. Locals play a crucial role in the success of this pilgrimage,” he said.

The Amarnath Yatra, which attracts thousands of pilgrims annually, continues to be a symbol of spiritual devotion and communal harmony in Jammu and Kashmir.(DD)
