Ganderbal/Srinagar, DD, In a crucial public health alert, the Jal Shakti (PHE) Rural Water Supply Division of Ganderbal/Srinagar revealed that the results of a random sampling and testing drive of various natural springs across Ganderbal district and rural Srinagar have shown alarming contamination levels.

Of the 40 water samples collected from different springs, 37 were found to be bacteriologically positive, rendering them unfit for human consumption.

The tests conducted by the PHE division have raised serious concerns about the safety of using spring water for drinking purposes. In light of these findings, the Jal Shakti Department has issued a public notice urging residents of Ganderbal District and rural areas of Srinagar, where spring water is commonly used for drinking, to refrain from using it until further notice. The department emphasized that tap water should be the primary source for drinking water as it adheres to safety standards set for human consumption.

While authorities are working to address the issue, they have provided a temporary solution for those who may have no alternative to spring water. The public has been advised that, should they need to use spring water, it must be boiled for an extended period to kill any harmful bacteria and pathogens before consumption. The department cautioned that unboiled spring water could pose significant health risks to individuals, particularly vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

This development has raised concerns among the local communities, many of whom have relied on these springs as their primary drinking water source for generations. Local officials, including Sarpanches and panchayat leaders, have called for increased awareness and support to help residents transition to safer water alternatives.

Authorities also assured that they are monitoring the situation closely and working towards restoring the safety of the affected spring water sources. Further updates and guidelines will be provided as the situation develops.

The Jal Shakti (PHE) Division has stressed that ensuring the safety of drinking water is a top priority for public health, and the public is urged to follow the instructions provided by the department to prevent any potential health hazards.(DD)
