New Delhi, (DD): A spate of attempted robberies in Vasant Kunj’s C9 Block has sparked fear and anger among residents, particularly after recent incidents involving senior citizens and what many describe as a dismissive attitude from the local Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA).
The first incident occurred during the night of 3rd to 4th March at the home of Mr Vikram Sharma, a resident of House No. 9506, where two unidentified individuals attempted to break open the front door.
The street dogs began barking, alerting the household and likely scaring off the intruders before any theft could occur.
Despite the gravity of the situation, residents reported that filing an FIR proved challenging, requiring persistent follow-up with local police. Concerned neighbours approached the RWA President, urging her to address the growing security concerns, but were reportedly met with indifference, the resident claimed.
“I was shocked at how lightly the matter was treated. We expected action, but got apathy instead,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous.
Matters worsened when, in the following week, two additional burglary attempts were reported—both at the homes of elderly residents. Though no major losses were reported, the pattern of break-in attempts has left the neighbourhood anxious and frustrated.
Local residents are now calling for immediate reinforcement of security protocols, increased patrolling, and proactive involvement from the RWA to re-establish the sense of security and prevent further incidents.
Meanwhile, Indian Army’s Brigadier (retired) Brijesh Pandey, whose relatives are residing in the colony, told Diplomat Digital that: “It was reliably learnt that Guards caught both the thieves. In the process of informing the Police, one escaped while the second was handed over to Police. Police took the second one along in their vehicle (it is evident from the CCTV footage that the second thief was walking and climbed the vehicle).”
“The Police, however, later claimed that he was hurt in the head during a scuffle with a guard earlier and went into coma,” he quoted police as saying.
He further stated that the Police later claimed that he was admitted in Safdarjung hospital. “The enquiry from the hospital revealed that no such admission had taken place as claimed,” he stated, expressing concern over the situation where the grievance remains unaddressed.
He referred to the complaint that was received successfully by the police under reference number 81710622500218, 04/03/2025 at SHO, PS – VASANT KUNJ NORTH, Delhi
He said that the police message about initial complaint was received, and later, a case under FIR number 0107/2025, 05/03/2025, U/S: THE BHARATIYA NYAYA SANHITA (BNS), 2023-3(5),62,303(2), was registered at PS VASANT KUNJ NORTH, District: SOUTH WEST has been registered.DD
