“We Are Slaves of the People, Not Anyone”: CM Omar Abdullah Takes Veiled Dig at LG, Slams Police Over July 13 Restrictions

Says attempt to block July 13 tribute won’t deter NC; alleges flag torn, workers manhandled

Srinagar, (DD): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday strongly criticised the administration and police for allegedly trying to obstruct his party’s tribute to the July 13 martyrs, asserting that such actions would not suppress the National Conference.

“If they think we are afraid or someone’s slaves, they are mistaken. We are people’s slaves — not anyone’s,” Omar said, in a veiled reference to the Lieutenant Governor-led administration. Omar along with his father Dr Farooq and entire NC leadership visited martyrs graveyad and paid tributes to 1931 martyrs.

He accused the police of using force to block National Conference leaders from reaching the Martyrs’ Graveyard. “They blocked our way, exchanged blows with us, and even tried to tear down our party flag,” he claimed.

Refusing to bow to administrative pressure, Omar said, “If they prevent us on July 13, we’ll do it on July 12 or July 14. We will not stop honouring our martyrs.”

The remarks follow the administration’s denial of permission for public gatherings at the historic graveyard in Nowhatta, a decision that has sparked sharp political reactions.(DD)
