Statehood for J&K Will Be Restored, But No Fixed Timeline: Amit Shah

Diplomat Correspondent

Srinagar, ((DD) Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir will regain statehood as promised but declined to specify a timeline for its restoration.

Speaking at the Times Now Summit 2025 on Friday night, Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to fulfilling its assurance. “We have always maintained that statehood will be restored. However, it is not possible to announce a specific timeframe on a public platform,” he said when asked about the restoration process.

Highlighting the peaceful conduct of the recent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Shah noted, “For the first time in 40 years, elections were held without any re-polling. No tear gas or bullets were used, and we recorded a 60% voter turnout—this marks a major transformation.”

Following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, Shah had assured Parliament that statehood would be reinstated at an appropriate time.(DD)
