Tug of war: Omar, Er Rashid, AIP trade allegations ahead of poll results in J&K

The Diplomat Desk

Srinagar, (TDD): Minutes after Awami Itehad Party (AIP ) Chief Er Sheikh Abdur Rashid urged the political parties not to form the government in J&K until Centre restores Statehood, National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah today said that Er Rashid went to Delhi for 24 hours and that he was playing into the hands of BJP.
Omar wrote on X, formerly known as twitter, that, “the man goes to Delhi for 24 hours and comes back to play straight into the hands of the BJP. The BJP would like nothing more than to extend central rule in J&K if they aren’t in a position to form a government.”
Responding to Omar’s statement, Inam Un Nabi wrote on X: “With all due respect, the call to delay government formation is not playing into anyone’s hands but is a demand for dignity, democracy, and the restoration of J&K’s rightful statehood before government formation. This was unjustly taken away under your watch and Congress’ complacency.”
He further added that Abdullah’s party had a history of collaborating with Delhi, referencing the 1975 accord and the controversial 1987 elections, which, according to him, contributed to the current political turmoil in the region. Inam emphasized that J&K requires a government built on principles and called for unity in the demand for statehood restoration rather than a rush for political power.
Patiently, the exchange highlights the growing debate among political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir regarding the future governance of the region and the restoration of its statehood, which remains a contentious issue since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019.
In the meanwhile, the question of government formation and statehood restoration continues to dominate discussions, with leaders offering differing views on the path forward for Jammu and Kashmir. (TDD)
