Jammu,DD: As part of the ongoing Saptahik Rangdhara theatre series, the Dogri play “Sakharam Binder” was today staged by Aazaad Parindey Kala Manch at Abhinav Theatre, Jammu. Organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, the production drew strong appreciation from the audience for its powerful performances and compelling direction.
The play, originally written by renowned playwright Vijay Tendulkar and adapted into Dogri by Shiv Mehta, explores the unsettling yet deeply human story of Sakharam, a bookbinder who offers shelter to women discarded by society. While his life appears harsh and unconventional, the narrative brings forth the emotional wounds, personal struggles and moral contradictions that shape his behaviour.
Directed and designed by Mohit Singh Chib, the Dogri adaptation highlighted the social realities, emotional complexities and psychological tensions embedded in Tendulkar’s writing.
The plot unfolds through Sakharam’s interactions with Laxmi and Champa—two women whose contrasting personalities and life experiences dramatically influence his journey. Laxmi’s quiet resilience awakens the gentler side of Sakharam, while Champa’s spirited presence and tragic fate challenge his pride and expose his vulnerabilities. The powerful staging, dialogues and performances kept the audience fully engaged throughout.
Janak Khajuria, portraying Sakharam, delivered a compelling and nuanced performance that effectively captured both the explosive and tender dimensions of the character. Renu Sharma as Laxmi won appreciation for her graceful and deeply emotive portrayal, bringing dignity and balance to the narrative.
Partiksha Sharma as Champa commanded the stage with her bold, intense and expressive performance, while Vivek Sangotra as Dawood contributed strongly to the dramatic progression. Supporting actors Manoj, Damir, Shammi, Saksham, Ankit and Manoj added further strength to the ensemble with their well-executed performances.
Following the presentation of the play, the group was felicitated by Dr. Javaid Rahi, Divisional Head JKAACL Jammu, along with Anil Tickoo, Assistant Cultural Officer, in recognition of their significant contribution to theatre and cultural promotion in the region. The gesture was warmly received by the artists and the audience alike.
The production team ensured a seamless theatrical experience. Backstage support included Sandeep Verma (Production Manager), Sunil Sharma (Light Design), Mohit and Saksham (Set Execution), Renu and Partiksha (Costumes), Ankit Sharma (Music), and Manoj, Damir and Shammi (Make-up), with Vivek Sangotra handling properties.
