ACB Charges Former ZEO, Junior Assistant in Rs 27 Lakh Scholarship Fraud in Baramulla

Baramulla, (DD)The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has filed a charge sheet against the former Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) of Chandanwari and a Junior Assistant for alleged embezzlement of over Rs 27 lakh from scholarship funds intended for underprivileged Gujjar, Bakerwal, and Pahari-speaking students in Baramulla district.

The investigation revealed that the accused officials misappropriated funds between 2014 and 2016 by falsifying records, fabricating beneficiary lists, and diverting scholarship amounts meant for economically and socially disadvantaged students from tribal communities.

The ACB initiated proceedings following credible inputs and conducted a detailed enquiry under FIR No. 03/2022 at Police Station ACB Baramulla. The misappropriation came to light after discrepancies were found in the disbursement records, prompting further scrutiny.

The Bureau has stated that the charge sheet has been submitted before the Hon’ble Special Anti-Corruption Court in Baramulla. Both the accused are facing charges under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code.

Officials emphasised that the misuse of welfare funds, especially those aimed at supporting marginalised communities, would be met with strict legal action. “Such betrayal of public trust and exploitation of the most vulnerable sections of society will not be tolerated,” an ACB spokesperson said.

The case has reignited concerns over accountability and transparency in the administration of scholarships and welfare schemes in Jammu and Kashmir.(DD)
