Kargil Administration Pioneers Fair Access with First-Ever Hostel Entrance Examination

Diplomat Correspondent

Kargil: DD, The District Administration, LAHDC Kargil, today successfully conducted its first-ever written entrance examination for admission to the Kargil Boys’ and Girls’ Hostels in Srinagar and Jammu, a landmark initiative that saw the participation of 415 students.

This crucial step officially marks the implementation of the new Hostel Admission Guidelines, which are specifically designed to establish a transparent, fair, and uniform system for hostel access, thereby ensuring equitable residential support for students from the Kargil district pursuing higher education and competitive exams.

Selection for all hostel seats will now be based strictly on performance in this written entrance examination, which was held successfully today across four centres: one in Kargil, one in Srinagar, and two in Jammu, all conducted under strict supervision.

The new guidelines mandate a clear reservation policy to ensure fair representation, allocating 80% of seats to the General Category, primarily for families with an annual income not exceeding ₹3.00 lakh, 10% of seats for Below Poverty Line (BPL) students with an annual income not exceeding ₹1.00 lakh, 5% for Students with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and the remaining 5% for Orphans or students from Single-Parent families.

To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Kargil District, possess a Domicile Certificate, and be regular, offline students enrolled in a recognized educational institution or coaching centre in Srinagar or Jammu.

The maximum duration of stay is strictly linked to the course type, not exceeding the official course completion period for undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional courses, with a five-year maximum for Ph.D. scholars, and generally two years for competitive exams, with a specific exception of three years granted to UPSC Civil Services aspirants.

The administration has also noted that students who fail their regular courses or are availing online coaching only will be required to vacate the hostel to ensure essential seats are available for eligible full-time students.

The successful conduct of this examination reinforces the Kargil Administration’s strong commitment to providing structured, merit-based, and subsidized residential support to its student community.DD
