Jammu:(DD) Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP) Nalin Prabhat on Friday stated that the primary focus of security forces in the ongoing encounter in Kathua was the safe retrieval of the bodies of fallen personnel. Addressing reporters in Jammu, he confirmed that this mission had been successfully accomplished, while efforts continue to eliminate any remaining threats in the area.

“For us, the top priority was to retrieve the bodies of our own martyrs, and we have succeeded in that. By tomorrow afternoon, things will be clear,” DGP Prabhat said, underlining the significance of honouring the sacrifice of security personnel.

Intense Gun Battle in Kathua

The encounter, which erupted in the early hours of the day, unfolded in a remote area of Kathua district, where heavily armed militants engaged security forces in a prolonged firefight. The operation was launched following intelligence inputs regarding the presence of terrorists in the region, prompting a swift and coordinated response from the Army, police, and paramilitary forces.

Gunfire and explosions echoed through the area as forces engaged the militants in an intense battle, leading to casualties on both sides. The operation was particularly challenging due to the rugged terrain and the militants’ strategic positioning, which prolonged the exchange of fire.

Martyrs Honoured, Search Operation Ongoing

Security personnel faced significant difficulties in retrieving the bodies of their fallen comrades due to heavy gunfire. However, after hours of tactical manoeuvres, they succeeded in recovering the remains, ensuring the martyrs were brought back with honour.

The operation is still ongoing, with forces conducting a thorough search of the encounter site to confirm the number of militants involved and their potential links to cross-border terror networks. Authorities are also investigating whether the group had infiltrated from across the Line of Control (LoC) or was operating as part of a sleeper cell.

Security Forces Maintain High Alert

In the aftermath of the encounter, security forces have intensified combing operations in surrounding areas to rule out the presence of additional militants. Roadblocks and security checks have been reinforced, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.

The Kathua encounter underscores the persistent security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, where militant infiltration and attacks continue to pose threats despite heightened surveillance and counter-terror operations.

Further updates on the operation, including the identity of the militants and any recoveries made from the site, are expected by tomorrow afternoon. (DD)
