Calls for strict action and public vigilance
Diplomat Correspondent
Srinagar, (DD)The Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU), Jammu and Kashmir’s largest umbrella body of religious organisations led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has expressed grave concern over alarming reports of rotten, unhygienic, and allegedly non-halal meat being circulated in the Valley’s markets, including street vendors, restaurants, and hotels.
Calling the matter a serious threat to both public health and Islamic dietary obligations, the MMU emphasized that ensuring halal compliance is a religious duty, especially in a Muslim-majority region like Jammu and Kashmir. The organization underscored that the sale or distribution of non-halal or spoiled meat violates core Islamic tenets and could have serious spiritual and health consequences.
The MMU reminded the public that it has already established a Halal Certification Committee, which certifies meat and related products in strict adherence to Islamic guidelines. It appealed to traders, hoteliers, restaurant owners, and meat vendors to procure meat only from certified and verified sources recognized by the committee.
In a strongly worded appeal to the administration, the MMU called for:
Immediate and transparent investigations into the reports of rotten and non-halal meat.
Strict legal action against those found guilty of endangering public health and flouting religious obligations.
Regular inspections and oversight of slaughterhouses, meat processing units, cold storage facilities, and supply chains to ensure both hygiene and halal standards.
The MMU further advised the general public to exercise caution in purchasing meat products and prefer certified, trusted sources until confidence is restored in the supply chain. It stated that religious institutions will continue to play a proactive role in safeguarding halal standards in the region.
