Omar Abdullah meets Amit Shah, discusses J&K Statehood, security, governance

Diplomat Correspondent
Srinagar, (DD): Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Monday, holding extensive discussions on the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, the prevailing security situation, and key governance matters. The meeting took place inside the Parliament building and comes amid ongoing political and administrative developments in the Union Territory.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Omar Abdullah said that he had a “detailed discussion” with Amit Shah regarding J&K’s future, including governance-related issues and preparations for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly budget session, which is scheduled to begin on March 3. This marks Omar Abdullah’s third meeting with Amit Shah since taking charge as the Chief Minister, underscoring continued engagement between the J&K administration and the central government.

On being asked about the status of the opposition’s INDIA bloc, Omar Abdullah maintained a cautious stance, stating that he would only discuss alliance-related matters within the bloc’s formal meetings rather than making public statements. “If INDIA bloc convenes a meeting in the future, I will raise the relevant issues there. If I say anything in the media, my words are often misinterpreted. So, I will reserve my opinions for the appropriate forum,” he said.

Notably, this meeting follows a high-level security review chaired by Amit Shah in New Delhi last week. The meeting, attended by senior security and civil administration officials, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, focused on the security landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. Given the recent counter-insurgency operations and border security challenges in the region, the Centre continues to prioritize security management in J&K(DD)
